Reading Horizons was one of just nine programs included on the approved list for K–5 supplemental instructional materials

(June 26, 2024—Kaysville, Utah) Reading Horizons, the leading provider of foundational literacy instruction, announces it has been approved by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) for K–5 supplemental instructional materials. Missouri joins more than 40 states in aligning instruction with the science of reading, and its Read, Lead, Exceed initiative will dedicate $25 million in state funding and just over $35 million in federal funding to support student literacy.

Reading Horizons is proud to be a proven partner in Missouri. Its evidence-based foundational literacy programs currently serve nearly 70,000 students across 22 school districts in Missouri; it plans to increase its impact exponentially during the upcoming school year.

“Having an opportunity to positively impact thousands of striving students across Missouri inspires everyone at Reading Horizons. Using our evidence-based method—crafted from over 40 years of innovation and research—we’re eager to empower Missouri educators to eradicate illiteracy in the state,” said Tyson Smith, CEO of Reading Horizons. “We take pride in being more than just a reading curriculum; we’re a supportive partner invested in the success of Missouri educators—and the students they serve.”

Reading Horizons Discovery®, which recently received a prestigious all-green rating from EdReports for supplemental-foundational reading skills, offers tech-enabled, explicit, systematic, and sequential instruction in phonics and decoding paired with phonemic awareness. The program helps educators harness the power of the science of reading to accelerate student literacy outcomes for K-3 students. Reading Horizons Elevate® is built off the same principles and methodology—with age-appropriate learning materials—and supports striving readers in grades four and above.

Student outcomes are why Reading Horizons exists. Through third-party research, Reading Horizons continues to receive validation for the effectiveness of its programs in boosting phonemic awareness, decoding, and oral fluency scores. See all of Reading Horizons’ research here.

On Thursday, May 23, 2024, Pitt County Schools and Reading Horizons, a leading provider of foundational literacy programs, celebrated student reading success at East Carolina University.

Since 2019, Pitt County elementary schools have used Reading Horizons Discovery®, a tech-enabled foundational literacy program that teaches explicit phonics for grades K–3. This school year, second-grade students in Pitt County Schools saw an average Lexile gain of 204L. Typically, students will see growth of 135L in a single year.

“Integrating Reading Horizons has been transformative for our district, deepening our teachers’ understanding of the science of reading,” said Lisa Tate, Director of Elementary Education for Pitt County Schools. “This has empowered educators with the tools to enhance literacy instruction for students, putting us on the path to growing stronger readers.”

By partnering with Reading Horizons, Pitt County Schools has aligned with the requirements of North Carolina’s Excellent Public Schools Act—Read to Achieve SB387. The bill requires schools to align literacy instruction to the science of reading, defined as “evidence-based reading instruction practices that address the acquisition of language, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling, fluency, vocabulary, oral language, and comprehension that can be differentiated to meet the needs of individual students.”

During the reception and award ceremony, teachers, families, and Reading Horizons staff celebrated the success of nearly 250 students.

“Pitt County is a perfect example of teamwork,” said Trisha Thomas, President of Reading Horizons. “Across this school district, everyone works toward a collective goal and makes it happen. The district and its leaders have been tremendous partners and continually push themselves—and Reading Horizons—to improve, all in the name of eradicating illiteracy.”

Reading Horizons Discovery earned all green ratings in phonological awareness and phonics.

Reading Horizons, a leading provider of foundational literacy programs, announced today that the Utah State Board of Education approved Reading Horizons Discovery® as a recommended Supplemental Literacy Curriculum Resource.

In 2022, Utah joined many states in realigning reading instruction to Structured Literacy grounded in the science of reading. The Utah State Board of Education convened a panel of experts to oversee implementing a requirement that districts use materials backed by the science of reading. Its goal is to get 70 percent of third-grade students in Utah reading at grade level by 2027.

The Utah State Board of Education acknowledged Reading Horizons Discovery® as a K–3 foundational literacy program that uses systematic direct instruction to build crucial early literacy skills, supporting all students to attain reading proficiency by the end of third grade. Following Utah SB 127’s mandate, the State Board of Education is implementing strategies to boost early literacy from kindergarten to third grade with expert-reviewed programs aligned with the science of reading.

“We are in year three of implementing Reading Horizons and have found it aligns strongly with the science of reading. We are so excited to see Reading Horizons Discovery® on Utah’s approved curriculum list for foundational skills with zero red flags. We have been anticipating this alignment. We see its value and the success it is giving students and teachers,” said Mindy Terry, instructional coach at Manila Elementary Daggett School District.

Reading Horizons Discovery® offers tech-enabled, explicit, systematic, and sequential instruction in phonics and decoding paired with phonemic awareness. Districts and schools aiming to enhance literacy instruction, trust and value Reading Horizons as a supportive partner that helps ensure students reach proficiency by the end of third grade.
