K–2 classrooms are implementing Reading Horizons Discovery® to boost countywide reading proficiency by the end of third grade

(September 17, 2024—Jackson, NC) Northampton County Schools has chosen Reading Horizons, a leading provider of foundational literacy programs, to enhance reading instruction in two elementary schools in northeastern North Carolina. The district is setting the stage for a successful school year by implementing a research-based foundational reading program to strengthen skills for its youngest learners across 19 K–2 classrooms. This move aligns with the county’s five-year strategic plan to increase the percentage of students proficient in reading by the end of 3rd grade.

The Reading Horizons Discovery® Product Suite is a leading program for effectively teaching foundational reading skills to young learners. Based on over 40 years of research, it blends direct instruction with engaging and age-appropriate software to make reading a reality for all learners. The program has proven successful across multiple settings, including whole classroom, intervention, special education, dyslexia, and multilingual learners.

Under the leadership of a newly appointed superintendent, Dr. Rosa Atkins, Northampton County Schools sought a science of reading-aligned literacy program that would offer clarity, consistency, and comprehensive support to students and teachers.

“We needed a program with a clear scope and sequence to help our teachers deliver effective phonics instruction, whether to the whole class or in small groups,” said Lakecia Brown, K–12 Director of Curriculum Instruction for Northampton County Schools. “Reading Horizons provides the structured support our new and alternatively certified teachers need. It was the missing piece.”

To ensure educators address all five elements of effective reading instruction, Northampton is pairing Reading Horizons—which specializes in foundational literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency—with a language comprehension curriculum focusing on vocabulary and comprehension.

Aside from improved reading proficiency, Northampton County leadership believes the confidence students will gain from Reading Horizons will transfer to science, math, and other subjects. Northampton County Schools’ investment in student literacy supports its mission to partner with families and communities by using a holistic approach to empower students to become responsible and engaged citizens.

“Northampton County’s commitment to excellence and thoughtfulness was evident from the start,” said Sean Lindsey, Director of Education Solutions at Reading Horizons. “They involved multiple stakeholders in their decision-making process, including instructional coaches and teachers, and didn’t only rely on third-party rubrics; they developed their own, aligned with the district’s instructional needs. Their focus on alignment, teacher voice, and insightful follow-up questions impressed me and underscored their dedication to making the right choice with Reading Horizons.”

The event empowered kindergarten parents with simple, effective ways to help their children practice reading at home.

In collaboration with Reading Horizons, a leading provider of foundational literacy programs, Cleveland County Schools hosted a highly successful Ready to Read Family Night on September 12, 2024. Nearly 100 families attended the event, which was open to all kindergarten families in Cleveland County Schools.

Ready to Read Family Night is part of an ongoing partnership between Cleveland County Schools and Reading Horizons, designed to establish a solid literacy foundation for all students. The event underscored the critical role of reading in academic success and was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and home practice. The night’s primary focus was to provide the necessary tools and support to foster a love of reading and enhance literacy skills at home and in the classroom.

“There’s no better time than the start of the school year to connect with the families of our newest students by offering them effective materials and practical strategies to promote reading practice at home,” said Lisa Smith, Literacy Coach for Cleveland County Schools. “By the end of the evening, we wanted families to feel confident using these resources to help their children become more proficient readers.”

The evening included a family dinner followed by an overview of the Reading Horizons program. The majority of the time was dedicated to providing parents with practical and actionable strategies they can easily implement at home to support their young readers effectively

“The parents of Cleveland County showed up ready to learn,” said Sean Lindsey, Director of Education Solutions at Reading Horizons. “The energy at Ready to Read Family Night was electric! Phonemic awareness and letter sound knowledge are the best predictors of how well a child will learn to read during their first two years of school. We wanted to equip families with that knowledge and provide strategies and tools they can use at home. It was truly a night to remember.”

After the event, several parents noted that the evening left a lasting impact, expressing excitement about learning how to support their child’s reading journey at home—whether through hands-on games, engaging exercises, or informative presentations.

New York, N.Y. August 2024 — A number of tutoring programs are designed to support young students as they learn to read; however, resources are more limited for students in grades 4 and up who still need explicit phonics and literacy instruction. To help districts support these students in developing their literacy skills, Littera Education and Reading Horizons have partnered to provide a comprehensive, high-impact tutoring solution.

Littera’s team of highly-trained virtual tutors will deliver 1:1 or small group sessions using Reading Horizons Elevate® and Littera Tutoring Management System (TMS). The Reading Horizons Elevate® program provides older developing readers and English Language Learners with knowledge of the structure of the English language and the skills for decoding and spelling. Explicit instruction and connection to text significantly increase accuracy and automaticity while building reading fluency and comprehension. All materials and resources are specifically designed for older learners.

“We’ve been hearing from our district partners that students struggling in upper elementary and secondary subjects are often missing the foundational literacy skills necessary to access higher level content., ” said Justin Serrano, CEO of Littera. “We’re thrilled to be able to provide these students with tutoring support using curriculum that’s specifically designed for older learners. Students won’t be engaged if the content isn’t age appropriate.“

The Reading Horizons® method is based on Orton-Gillingham principles of instruction and is taught explicitly, systematically, and sequentially, building from the simplest concept to the more complex. Through explicit phonics instruction, Reading Horizons Elevate® helps older learners—of all cultural backgrounds and abilities—learn the skills required to read fluently.

“We know what a positive difference our curriculum has made on innumerable students in intervention settings.  Unfortunately, schools often struggle with finding the resources necessary to provide ongoing support for older learners,” said Chief Strategy Officer, Stephanie Myers.  “High-impact tutoring is an effective and sustainable solution. We’re excited about the impact we can have on students’ lives by combining our science-based curriculum with this evidence-based delivery model.”
