This is How We Learn to Read

Step 1: Letter Sound Correspondence

First, students learn the 44 phonemes of the English language, beginning with the 26 letters of the alphabet.

Step 2: Blends

Next, students learn how to blend sounds together.

Step 3: Vowels

Then, students learn the 5 phonetic skills to determine the vowel sounds in a word—and whether they are short or long.

Step 4: Syllables

Finally, students learn the two decoding skills to understand how to separate words into syllables.

Step 5: Time to Read!

Using these skills, students can recognize, decode, and read words of any length!
